Six months ago I was getting up four times a night. My wife had moved to the spare room. I’d tried three different supplements and a prescription I quit after reading the side effects.
Now I sleep through. Every night.
I’m not going to tell you it was easy to figure out. But I am going to tell you it had nothing to do with any of the things I tried first.
My doctor called it BPH. He said it was common in men my age, which is 57, and that I had two choices: medication or learning to live with it. I took the pamphlet home. I read it. I filed it in the drawer where you file things you don’t want to think about.
For about eight months I did what most men do. I cut off liquids after 7pm. Tried saw palmetto from the grocery store. Bought some beta-sitosterol capsules off the internet. Stood in the bathroom at 3am wondering how this had become my life.
Nothing moved the needle. Not even a little.
The thing that finally made me start asking different questions
I don’t remember exactly what I searched. Something like “why does nothing work for BPH” at probably 2 in the morning. Not my finest moment, but honest.
What I found wasn’t a product. It was a line of thinking I hadn’t come across before, buried under the usual supplement marketing and forum arguments. The short version is this: most of what men are sold for prostate health treats symptoms. It doesn’t ask why the prostate ends up in this condition in the first place.
That question, obvious as it sounds, had never been put to me by a doctor. They’re not trying to hide anything. It just isn’t what the appointment is for.
The more I read, the more I found researchers asking that same question and arriving at some uncomfortable answers. Answers that had nothing to do with age as some inevitable sentence, and everything to do with what we’ve been putting into our bodies for decades, mostly without knowing it.
I want to be careful here because I’m not a doctor and I don’t want to overstate what I know. But the direction of the research genuinely surprised me. It surprised me enough that I kept reading for three hours and only stopped because the sun came up.
What I eventually found, and what I did about it
At some point I came across a presentation someone had put together. A video. Which, if you’re like me, is not how you expect to find anything useful. I’ve closed a hundred of those without watching more than thirty seconds.
I watched this one to the end.
It laid out a specific biological explanation for why the prostate deteriorates the way it does in so many men, tied it to something most of us are exposed to every single day, and then walked through what the research says about addressing it at that level rather than just managing the symptoms downstream.
The mechanism it described made sense to me in a way that “your prostate is enlarged, here are some pills” never had. I’m not going to try to summarize it here because I’d do it badly, and because the presentation does a much better job than I could in a few paragraphs.
I’ll just say: I ordered something. I used it. And I have now slept through the night more times in the last three months than I did in the two years before that combined.

Why I’m writing this at all
Honestly, because nobody told me any of this.
I spent two years going through channels: the doctor, the pharmacy, the internet forums full of men comparing supplement brands. I found the thing that actually helped by accident, at 2am, because I was frustrated enough to look past the first page of results.
If you’re a man over 45 who’s accepted that getting up at night three or four times is just part of the deal now, I’d ask you to watch this before you accept that. It’s about thirty minutes. You might disagree with all of it. But I think the idea deserves to be heard, and I’d rather more men hear about it than not.
