“Wear and tear” is the most common explanation doctors give for joint pain. It’s also one of the laziest.
Here’s what it actually means when a doctor says it: I don’t know what caused this, and I don’t have anything that fixes it, so let’s call it aging and move on.
It implies your joints are like brake pads. Use them long enough and they grind down. Nothing to be done. Learn to live with it.
The problem is that the research doesn’t support this. And once you see what researchers are actually finding, the “wear and tear” story falls apart pretty quickly.
Cartilage doesn’t just wear out
